The Hoelscher Ferrer North America (HFNA) consortium has started its operations with the completion of its first Dewatering in Canada. It has been executed in the works of a wastewater pumping station in the town of Orillia, Ontario.

This inaugural project has received the esteemed ‘The Dewatering Consultant Project of the Year‘ distinction in the Award Winners 2023 gala, organized by the renowned global entity, The Dewatering Institute. This prestigious award serves as a strong endorsement of the consortium’s implementation process in Canada, with FERRER® playing a pivotal role as a strategic partner.

Facing water table control challenges that had led a prior company to halt excavation of the WWTP, the contractor JB Enterprises reached out to Hoelscher Ferrer North America for resolution. The previous subcontractor had attempted to lower the water table using an eductor-based system, but its design and capacity proved ineffective.

Pumping Station

The construction of the pumping station presented several challenges: its location in an area bathed by the waters of Lake Simcoe; next, the presence of the water table at a depth of just one meter; the depth of the excavation at 12 meters; and the preferential hydraulic connection of the underlying rocky substrate with the lake itself, manifested from a depth of 16 meters.

After a thorough analysis of the previous project’s shortcomings, HFNA‘s technical team devised a solution involving a network of 10 low-capacity deep wells. This innovative approach was rooted in a 3D porous medium numerical flow model, known by the code FEFLOW®.

The execution was completed in a remarkable 45 days, despite facing challenges such as extremely low temperatures, reaching as low as -20°C (-4°F), as well as the unique
characteristics of the soil used, lacking compaction or natural cohesion. These soil properties contributed to the differential settlement of the platform during the installation of the wells.

Dewatering in Canada

The successful completion of HFNA’s Dewatering in Canada plan made it possible to proceed with the construction of the pumping station. All project objectives were met. The determination and confidence that JB Enterprises placed in HFNA played a crucial role in the success of this project.

The previous Wastewater Pumping Station was over 90 years old, and its capacity was insufficient for current needs. This new WWTP, whose works were resumed thanks to the intervention of HFNA, will allow the expansion and improvement of Orillia’s sewage systems.

This prestigious award is a great endorsement of the settlement process of FERRER® in Canada and of the consortium of which it is part, HFNA. «The award is the recognition of a complex work well planned and executed», said HFNA partner and technical director, Alejandro Ferrer. «For HFNA it is gratifying to the extent that it reaches all the members of the team, both those who have acted directly on the design and execution as well as those who have participated with their indirect contributions such as management, organization and administration», added Ferrer.

‘The Dewatering Consultant Project of the Year’

HFNA submitted to the Award Winners 2023 of The Dewatering Institute the project for the implementation of a Wastewater Pumping Station (WWPS) in the town of Orillia, Ontario (Canada).

HFNA was contacted by contractor JB Enterprises to resolve the water table control issues that had forced the excavation of the WWTP to be put on hold for more than a year. HFNA’s technical management designed a Dewatering system based on 10 low-capacity deep wells, replacing other ineffective systems that would have been used by previous subcontractors.

The execution of the Dewatering work was completed in just 45 days despite numerous inconveniences. Examples of these were the low temperatures reached, reaching -20 °C, or the limited bearing capacity of the soil where the drilling machine was placed, which caused instability of the equipment. This soil, inside the enclosure confined by secant piles, had been filled as a working platform up to the level of the external roads.

In addition, and in the words of Alejandro Ferrer, «this ‘The Dewatering Consultant Project of the Year’ shows once again that any conclusion based on theory must always be tempered with experience; a project can be undertaken with confidence when the theoretical conclusions coincide with those of the experts, judgment and vice versa», said.

La gala Award Winners 2023 ha premiado al consorcio Hoelscher Ferrer North America (HFNA) en la categoría ‘Dewatering Consultant Project of the Year‘. La ceremonia telemática la organizó The Dewatering Institute, entidad de ámbito mundial.

Este prestigioso galardón supone un gran espaldarazo al proceso de implantación de FERRER® en Canadá y del consorcio del que forma parte HFNA. «El premio reconoce un trabajo complejo bien planteado y ejecutado», ha señalado el socio y director técnico de HFNA, Alejandro Ferrer. «Para HFNA es gratificante en la medida que alcanza a todos los componentes del equipo, tanto los que han actuado directamente sobre el diseño y ejecución del Dewatering como los que han participado con sus aportaciones indirectas como gestión, organización, administración, etc.», ha añadido.

HFNA presentó al galardón el proyecto de ejecución de una Estación de Bombeo de Aguas Residuales (EBAR) en la localidad de Orillia, en Ontario (Canadá). La gala de The Dewatering Institute, que culminó con la concesión de premio en la categoría ‘Dewatering Consultant Project of the Year‘, se celebró de forma telemática.

La empresa contratista JB Enterprises contactó con HFNA para resolver los problemas relacionados con el control del nivel freático que habían obligado a paralizar la excavación de la EBAR durante más de un año. La dirección técnica de HFNA diseñó un sistema de Dewatering basado en 10 pozos profundos de baja capacidad. De esa forma se sustituyeron otros sistemas inefectivos que habían utilizado anteriores subcontratistas.

La ejecución de los trabajos asociados al Dewatering se llevó a cabo en apenas 45 días a pesar de inconvenientes como las bajísimas temperaturas, que en algunos momentos llegaron a los -20 C, o la reducida capacidad portante del suelo donde se emplazó la máquina perforadora, lo que provocaba desestabilidad del equipo. Así, se rellenó el suelo interior del recinto confinado por pilotes secantes, como plataforma de trabajo, hasta la cota de los viales exteriores. «Este proyecto evidencia una vez más que cualquier conclusión basada en la teoría debe atemperarse siempre con la experiencia. Un proyecto puede acometerse con confianza cuando las conclusiones teóricas coinciden con las del juicio de los expertos, y viceversa», ha añadido Alejandro Ferrer.

La Estación de Bombeo de Aguas Residuales permitirá ampliar y mejorar los sistemas de alcantarillado de Orillia. De hecho, la anterior EBAR acumulaba más de 90 años de antigüedad y su capacidad era insuficiente para las necesidades actuales.
